This is a wonderful Oil on Mahogany Panel painted by James Hoskins, The mahogany is hand beveled which would indicate late 18th or early 19th century. On the back is a label that reads, ”Painted by James Hoskins great grandfather of Elizabeth (Haynes or Hayward)”. I did find an artist, James Hoskins that died in 1791 but the only thing attributed to him was sculptures. This is an Autumn scene showing a boy and his dog with some cattle along the river bank.. The piece has been professionally framed and held in a smoke free home. The framed dimensions are 14 7/8”x 13 5/8”. The panel measures 12” x 9 3/4”.
